Keeping the peace

If you live with someone who snores, you probably know that snoring is loud, annoying and very hard to sleep with.

What you might not know is that snoring can also be life-threatening!

Two out of every 10 Australian adults snore. When throat and mouth muscles relax, the soft tissue in the throat partially closes the airway. As air rushes past the soft tissue, it vibrates, creating the familiar snoring sound.

But sometimes the muscles relax so much the airway completely closes and the sleeper stops breathing for 10 seconds or more. This is called Sleep Apnoea. If left untreated, sleep apnoea can lead to...

  • chronic tiredness
  • poor concentration
  • morning headaches
  • increased risk of accidents
  • increased risk of stroke, high blood pressure and heart problems
  • anxiety or depression

Treatment (link to below text)

sleeping_150To treat snoring and sleep apnoea, Algester Dental has developed ExcelSleep. ExcelSleep consists of a comfortable set of custom-made retainers that fit over your upper and lower teeth and joined by a hinge. The hinge helps ExcelSleep keep your jaw forward in the right position, so the soft tissue can't close your airway.

It's so effective, the ExcelSleep has shown up to a 90% reduction in snoring and up to 50% reduction in sleep apnoea in clinical studies.
